What is Noun?

 Definition of Noun:


A noun is the name of a person, animal, place, idea, feeling, or thing. i.e
Adam, Herry, Ali, Turkey, Sweden, New York, laptop, mobile, lion, happiness, excitement, etc

Types of Nouns:


There are 9 types of nouns.
  • Proper Nouns
  • Common Nouns
  • Countable Nouns
  • Uncountable Nouns
  • Abstract Nouns
  • Concrete Nouns
  • Collective Nouns
  • Compound Nouns
  • Gerunds

1. Proper Nouns:


A Proper refers to any specific person, place, thing, etc. A proper noun begins with a capital letter.




2. Common Nouns:

A common noun refers to any person, place, thing in general. It starts with small letters unless it comes at the beginning of a sentence.

3. Countable Nouns:


As the name shows these nouns refer to the things that can be counted. We can make the plural of them.
i.e a book, ten books, three apples, fifty coins, four horses, etc

4. Uncountable Nouns:


This type refers to the names of things that can't be counted. They come in a singular form and can not be pluralized.

i.e liquids, gasses, feelings, activities, some food items, materials, etc are examples of uncountable nouns.

5. Abstract Nouns: 


It refers to the names of things that can't be experienced through our senses i.e they can not be touched, feel, or see. 

Examples of Abstract nouns are 

feelings & emotions
 (happiness, angry, hurt, joy, satisfaction)

qualities (friendly, courage, patience, etc)

Ideas ( education, knowledge, freedom)

6. Concrete Nouns:


Concrete nouns are the opposite of Abstract nouns. These are the names of things that we can see and touch i.e bottle, water, wood, mobile, etc

7. Collective Nouns:


A collective noun is the name of a group of people, things, animals, etc 

people: class, team, audience, league, army, band, crowd, troop, crew

Things: bouquet, bunch, pack, set, library

Animals: a cast of falcons, train of camel, a hive of bees, a tribe of goats, a pride of lions

8. Compound Nouns:


Compound nouns are made with two or more words.

Some compound nouns have hyphens i.e
mother-in-law, dining-table, five-years-old, short-term, twenty-one


Others are without hyphens or close compound nouns, act like one word
sunrise, football, textbook, software

Open compound nouns are made up of two words but they are without hyphens
bus stop, orange tree, prime minister,  

9. Gerunds:


Gerunds are nouns formed by adding 'ing' with a verb and they act like a noun.


She is swimming in a pool. (as a verb)
She likes swimming. ( swimming as a noun

He is talking nicely. (talk as a verb)
He is liked for talking nicely. (as a noun)

I am reading a novel. (reading as a verb)
Reading is such a pleasure. (as a noun)


She is flying to London. (flying as a verb)
She is afraid of flying. (as a noun)
